United India Divided in Reservation

Reservation is an old talk in the country but before we start with it - again, let us first begin with an incident that pushed me to write on this issue. I’ll be brief on that. Yesterday, I was at my cousin’s place who happens to be preparing for UPSC examination. We all know what and how tough that is so I think I need not talk about the exam itself. My cousin always made it big in his school and college but he was a little low on hope this time. Yeah, he says reservation is what he fears. While I don’t encourage his thought, I surely cannot deny from the fact that there’s a good chance that reservation is something which might end up with him not getting through UPSC.

We’ve all heard about reservation at some point of time in our life. I’d say you aren’t really on the internet if you haven’t, ever, stumbled on to some reservation joke while being connected. While many of us praise our government (usually those benefiting) for having such an important chapter in its jurisdiction, there are some who consider it a curse on them. Is it really the best our government could come up with to raise the living standards of unprivileged in our country or is it just another law lying down in our constitution seeking immediate amendment?

We find reservation everywhere we go, let that be schools, colleges, universities or jobs.  There is reservation in exams like JEE, NEET, SSC, UPSC etc. Oh, I almost forgot, there is reservation in buses and trains too. While reservation might help a community, it may come out to be a disastrous decision at times. Consider a doctor having inadequate knowledge about the subject, courtesy to reservation, in an operation theatre with an open body lying on the operation table in front of him. Or a civil engineer building huge buildings, flyovers and magnificent infrastructure, molded with reservation, which might end up into ground in no time taking numerous lives with it and causing enormous destruction. We have all witnessed such incidents in the past. How can we even expect a country to be at its prime if reservation is feeding up on its bones? Merits should be the basis of education system and not reservation but we all know how it goes in India. Reservation is one amongst the many prominent reasons why capable young minds turn to foreign countries to fulfil their dreams after being disowned by their own.

Reservation is necessary to rise the bars for the unprivileged…. agreed, but many who are privileged enough or perhaps have more to it are tapping this weak pulse to their advantage. Reservation wasn’t meant for OBCs, SCs or STs, it was meant for the unprivileged and that’s how it should be. We’ve all seen people who belong to one of the reserved category but are actually richer that most in the general category and yet, they enjoy the facilities bestowed upon them by the law. Providing reservation rights to someone who is not worthy enough is killing opportunities for those who actually deserve it. Not only does the ‘general’ category have to suffer because of this but also those who rightfully deserve reservation are not given a proper chance because the seats have already been filled with. There is a solid 49.5% reservation for OBCs, SCs and STs combined while there is only 1%-1.5% of reservation (depending upon the state we’re talking about) for physically disabled if we go according to the constitution. Is it fair enough?

No matter what, reservation has always been a much discussed issue in our country and we all know why. While reservation is deeply engraved in our constitution and the society, it actually is meant to perform some real productive work but seldom did it do what it was meant to. Passing on reservation rights doesn’t ends up the responsibilities of the so called karta-dhartas of our country, sitting their asses on comfortable chairs. Checking on that these facilities reach up to those who actually need them is also a part of their responsibility. Inefficient reservation system, instead of bridging the differences in the society, would rather magnify it as it would result in a feeling of jealousy and hatred towards the unrightfully reserved people. While reservation is a necessary evil, immediate amendments to the reservation system is required to think people through it. While this form of the system has been active since the laying down of our constitution, it is never too late to right our wrongs.

Many might not like this post especially those who are being talked about but tell me one thing -  Is reservation really doing justice? Now answer the same question looking through the eyes of those who have been a prey to reservation.
